Rammellzee (1960–2010) started out painting the A train from Far Rockaway, Queens, and turned graffiti letters into armed machines. He called his theory Gothic Futurism: letters freed from the rules of the alphabet and sent into battle. He rapped on the legendary record Beat Bop, appeared in Wild Style and built Letter Racers and heavy Garbage God costumes in his Tribeca loft, the Battlestation.

Here you find the official site, his key works, the places in New York tied to him, the European retrospective that ends in Bolzano in 2027, museums and galleries with his work, auction results, films and YouTube videos, books and the artists around him.

Questions about Rammellzee

Who was Rammellzee?

A New York artist (1960–2010) from Far Rockaway, Queens: graffiti writer on the A train, painter, sculptor, performer, theorist and rapper. He is known for Gothic Futurism, the record Beat Bop and his Letter Racers and Garbage God costumes.

What is Gothic Futurism?

His theory of letters at war: like monks who once ornamented letters, he "armed" them to fight the standard rules of the alphabet. He later called the next stage Ikonoklast Panzerism, and his Letter Racers are its sculptural form.

What was the Battlestation?

His live/work loft at 46 Laight Street in Tribeca, shared with his wife Carmela. He made his late sculptures and costumes there; after 9/11 the building was sold and he had to move. MOCA re-created it in 2011.

Why is Beat Bop so famous?

The 1983 record by Rammellzee and K-Rob was produced by Jean-Michel Basquiat, who also drew the cover. Original pressings are rare, which makes it one of the most valuable rap records.
