Street art sculpture: a buyer's guide
Many artists with a graffiti or street background have moved into three-dimensional work, and street art sculpture now covers everything from cast resin figures to bronzes and objects made from spray cans. This page lists live eBay offers for resin and bronze sculptures, artist sculptures and spray can art. Unlike a wall piece, a sculpture can be kept, moved and displayed indoors, which makes it attractive for collectors who want a physical object rather than a print.
Types and materials
- Resin sculptures: lightweight and detailed, often produced as a multiple in a set number of casts and hand-painted or finished in the studio.
- Bronze sculptures: heavier and more durable, usually cast in a foundry and sometimes marked with a foundry stamp, cast number or signature.
- Artist sculptures: works by or after names such as KAWS or Banksy. Many listings are reproductions or "inspired by" decor, so read the description closely.
- Spray can sculptures: real or cast spray cans transformed into art objects, a format that refers directly to graffiti tools.
What drives value and price
The most important distinction is between an authorized artist work and a decorative piece using a famous image. Authorized street art sculpture is typically released in a defined edition and may come with a numbered base, a publisher's box or paperwork. Material, size and the quality of the finish matter as well. Hand finishing can make each copy slightly different, which some collectors appreciate.
Documentation strongly affects how a piece is received on the secondary market. Original receipts, gallery invoices and exhibition history all build provenance. Be careful with sellers who use an artist's name in the title without explaining the connection, or who offer a well-known design at a fraction of typical prices.
Checking condition
Inspect photos for chips, cracks, repaired breaks, scratches in the paint and discoloration. Resin can yellow or become brittle with age and sunlight, while bronze develops a patina that should be even rather than blotchy. Ask whether the original packaging, base and any certificates are included, and request close-ups of signatures, stamps and numbers.
Display and care
Place sculptures on a stable surface away from direct sun, heaters and high-traffic spots. Dust resin with a soft brush and avoid household cleaners. For bronze, a dry cloth is usually enough; let a professional handle any deeper cleaning.
