Street art stencil works: originals, prints and templates
The stencil is one of the defining techniques of street art. A cut-out template is held against a surface and sprayed over, transferring an image quickly and repeatably. Artists such as Blek le Rat, often described as a pioneer of stencil art in Paris, and Banksy have made the technique famous worldwide. This category collects street art stencil items of every kind: stencil originals on canvas, Banksy-style images, works associated with Blek le Rat, spray stencil canvases and reusable templates for your own projects.
What this category includes
- Stencil art on canvas and paper: hand-sprayed works, sometimes using several layers for tone and depth.
- Banksy-style stencils: reproductions, homages and decor pieces inspired by well-known images.
- Prints: posters and editioned prints of stencil motifs.
- Stencil templates: reusable plastic or card stencils for walls, furniture, textiles and crafts.
What drives value, and what to watch out for
Most stencil items on eBay are decorative: templates, canvases in a Banksy style and posters. They can be great fun to own, but they are not the same as a work by a named artist. The key questions are who made the piece, whether it is a hand-sprayed original or a print, and whether there is credible documentation. Stencil images are easy to reproduce, which makes them one of the most copied areas of the market.
This applies especially to Banksy. Works sold as genuine Banksy should be backed by a certificate from Pest Control, Banksy's official authentication body. A generic certificate printed by a seller is not the same thing. For other artists, look for a signature, edition details, a gallery invoice or a certificate of authenticity from the artist or their studio. If a listing uses a famous name only in the title, read the description carefully: many items are described as "in the style of" or "after" a well-known artist.
Condition and display
Spray paint on canvas is fairly robust, but check for scratches, flaking paint and stretcher damage. Paper works can show creases, fading or spots. Stencil art often has strong contrast, so it works well in hallways, stairwells and living rooms. Frame paper works with UV-filtering glass and hang canvases away from direct sunlight.
