Signed street art: what a signature really tells you
A hand signature is one of the strongest factors in the street art market. For many artists, the same image exists both signed and unsigned, and buyers often treat the two very differently. This page shows live eBay listings for signed street art: prints, originals, books and works offered with a certificate of authenticity.
What this category includes
- Signed prints: screenprints, giclées and lithographs signed by hand, usually in pencil in the lower margin.
- Signed originals: unique works on canvas, paper or objects; see our glossary entry on the original.
- Signed books: monographs and catalogues signed at book launches or exhibitions.
- Works with COA: pieces offered together with documentation of authenticity.
Why signatures matter for value
A signature links a specific copy to the artist, which is why signed and unsigned versions of the same image can sell in very different ranges. That link only adds value if it can be trusted. Popular street art signatures are among the most frequently faked, so a signature on its own is never proof. Printed signatures, stamped signatures and signatures in the image rather than in the margin should be described clearly by the seller.
Documentation is what turns a signature into something buyers can rely on. A certificate of authenticity is meaningful only when it comes from the artist, the studio, the publisher or a recognized authentication body. A certificate written by the seller or an unknown third party adds little. Receipts, gallery invoices and records of previous sales strengthen the provenance of signed street art.
How to check a listing
- Ask for close-ups of the signature, edition number and any blind stamps.
- Compare the signature with verified examples from galleries, publishers or auction catalogues.
- Check that paper size, technique and edition details match known information about the work.
- Be cautious with prices well below typical levels and with sellers who cannot answer basic questions.
Care and display
Signatures in pencil can smudge and fade, so handle works by the edges and keep them out of direct sunlight. Archival framing with UV-filtering glass helps protect the paper and signature over time.
